. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. suspect james holmes is back in solitaire confinement this morning after keeping quiet during his initial court appearance yesterday. his family is standing by him and they're concerned about the death penalty. investigators for james holmes defense team are scheduled to be inside the century 16 theater today. they'll be looking for any evidence they can find which could help defend their client. on monday, holmes appeared in court for the first time for a preliminary hearing. his hair was dyed orange red and he had a dazed look as a judge advised him about his rights and his alleged crime. >> you committed the offense of first-degree murder which is a class 1 felony under colorado law. >> reporter: some of the victims' families were inside the courtroom including ian sullivan, father of veronica missourier sullivan, the youngest to die in the shootings. david sanchez waited outside of the courtroom. his son-in-law was shot in the head and is in critical condition. >> to feel the pain in there makes you more angry about this man that dec

gunman now identified as 24-year-old james eagan holmes. he was arrested outside the theater near the back of a apartment. outside police found three weapons in that car, another gun was found inside the theater. authorities evacuated everyone in the suspect's apartment building by 4:00 a.m. after he warned them that his home was booby trapped. when they broke in later they found incendiary and chemical devices as well as apparent trip wires. police are still on the scene at that apartment. let's get the very latest right now starting with cnn's ed lavandera. he's over at the movie theater where all of this unfolded. what is the very latest, ed? >> reporter: wolf, we've just confirmed with a law enforcement source as to where these four guns were purchased. we've been told by this law enforcement source that all four guns were purchased legally within the last six months. two of the guns were purchased at a bass pro shop in the city of denver. one of the guns was purchased at a mountain gander gun store here in the town of aurora. another was purchased at a gander mountain in thor

the apartment of james holmes, the suspected colorado shooter. a law enforcement official has described to cnn video taken from inside the apartment. he said it was set up like something from iraq or afghanistan. 30 improvised grenades rigged to a control box in the kitchen and gas containers filled with ten gallons of gas, allegedly for the purpose of adding more fuel to the fire in an explosion. cnn's jim spelman is in aurora, colorado, right outside the theater where the shooting happened. the description of the apartment is extraordinary and terrifying. what else do you know about it? >> reporter: just trying to picture 30 of the home-made grenades filled with black powder and gas containers around to amplify the fire after these things went off. all set to a srs of trip wires. one set to go off when the first person who goes in opens the door. it took them almost two days to come up with a strategy to eliminate them. ultimately they used water to disrupt the control box. these things were so volatile, they had to carry each one out in a bucket of sand to a dump truck, take them out into t
